a rough draft of my artist statement

Artist Statement

Ideas, light, landscapes, thoughts well up in me and splash out as art. My work is technical, exacting, academic, deliberate, with all my heart’s love thrown in for good measure.

I’m an architect by training (UNL/GBR) and profession and I like to think of myself as a bit of a philosopher. Focusing on historic preservation and residential design there seemed to be no preserving my one woman firm from the building bubble. Back in God’s Country, now, with lifelong friends and family, I’m doing full time what I’ve always loved best, Art!

I document our beautiful scenery, our best places, I contemplate our existence in this Universe under our starry milky way. I create objects of fine art slowly by hand with care and attention. I use traditional techniques, sometimes in new ways, always with purpose.

In my current work I would like the viewer to participate; recognize the land, remember themselves there, see themselves involved in the work, and to bring their own experiences imagined and real to the story of the piece. Life should be about making the everyday story extraordinary, immediate and rich. I believe without doubt that Truth and Beauty are one, in the present and for all time.

Art as a means of connecting.

All of us have moments of great clarity. Our heart seems to open and the world, the universe floods in. The best art connects us to those moments deeply and profoundly. The size, the medium, the utility, the durability of the work are all secondary to the fact that the person creating is using every bit of knowledge and craftsmanship they have to give to connect you to that moment of great clarity. When you share that moment with them, you know. It speaks to you. It reminds you of your own moments. It tells you a story you want to hear again and again. The emotion you feel when experiencing art that you personally love is like listening to a favorite piece of music. It speaks directly to you. It is to some degree telling your story.

No one connects to any work of art the exact way you do. Your insights and understanding of what you see, read, feel are yours alone. And yet, in some ways they are shared on some level with everyone. Everyone who has ever experienced a great moment of clarity is sharing this moment with you.
